Anti-Imperalist Solidarity - Al Sadr?

Well we do live in strange times.

In Denver at the moment there is a wide array of politicians, lobbyists and hangers-on assembled for the Democratic National Convention. As is the case at these events, various elements gather to put there case as to things they believe should happen. Rightly so.

However, one photo of one the various protests happened to catch my attention. I have posted it.

Muqtada Al-Sadr is an Iraqi politician. Many think that he is a religious scholar although he is not. He would like to be though. Mr. Al-Sadr commands his power at the barrel of a gun. He has his very own armed force and a large one at that. Now the holders of that banner presumably think that Al-Sadr is some form of anti imperialist who is fighting for the liberation of the oppressed people of the world and indeed inside Iraq. Far from it. Al-Sadr would prefer to be under the control of Iran rather than pursuing Iraqi independence. He is not interested in Iraqi liberation. In fact, despite the constant encouragement by the US for Al-Sadr to participate in the political process without the strong arm tactics of his armed militia he has constantly refused.

The armed forces under the control of Al-Sadr have been responsible for the assassination and one can only presume beheading of various individuals inside Iraq. This is not a movement for Liberation. His was a simple grab for power for his own means not those of the Iraqi people.

Those leftists who carry that banner should be ashamed of themselves for supporting an individual who is responsible, in large part, for the continued destabilisation of Iraq.
